One of the most popular melodies that has been passed down through generations is the song - AMAZING GRACE. It has always been one of our favorites. The melody is simple but moving. When we read the story behind the writing of this melody; it moved us even more. It was written by a man named John Hudson; who like all of us was definitely in need of "grace" in his life. He had been a captain of a slave ship; and was not liked by many people - even his own crew. He was mean and rough. A life threatening experience caused him to reflect on his life and make the decision to change his life. In that process, he became a minister and wrote some songs; one of them being "Amazing Grace".
When you look up the word "grace" - the definitions that come up are: 'Simple elegance, refinement of movement'. In Christian belief, the meaning of the word is: 'The free and unmerited favor of God, as manifested in the salvation of sinners and the bestowal of blessings'. Another definition that came up was: 'The love and mercy given to us by God because God desires us to have it, not because of anything we have done to earn it'.
We are human beings; and even in our best efforts, we make a mistake or let someone down. How discouraging it would be if we didn't know that "grace" from others and from our Savior helps to buffer our best efforts that may go awry at times. We are so grateful this Thanksgiving season for His mighty love and grace; and for the love and grace of other people. After all, we are ALL trying to become better every day and rely so much on this "amazing grace".
We wrote an original arrangement of this beloved melody; and put an african rhythm and chant to it; which seemed most appropriate when considering the history behind the music. Please be looking for the release of Autumn Sky's arrangement of "AMAZING GRACE" next week!
